Treak Cliff Cavern

Castleton

Derbyshire

Underground caverns which are mostly natural but part mine with fine examples of stalactites, stalagmites, dripstone formations, 330-million-year-old marine life fossils from the carboniferous period and visible rich veins of Blue John stone. There has been a working Blue John mine since 1750; an old mine tunnel made in the first half of the 18thC takes you into a cave system full of Blue John with many veins now preserved for everyone to see, especially in the Witches' Cavern where the 'Pillar' is to be seen, the largest piece of Blue John ever found.
