Cambridge
The breathtaking view of King's College Chapel from across the river Cam, you are in Cambridge with its intricacy of Gothic architecture, and the common sight of students cycling to lectures, or people punting on the river Cam.
Cambridge in the East of England region is perhaps best know for its renowned university which became the second oldest in the world when it was founded in the 13th century by monks escaping from Oxford. The University is now regarded as the centre of excellence for technology and science, one of its most famous sons was Sir Isaac Newton.
There is so much to see and do in and around Cambridge and over 3 ½ million people visit the area each year; it makes a wonderful base for exploring the area. Many beautiful towns and villages are easily accessible from Cambridge and a visit to nearby Ely with its cathedral is well worth seeing.
Cambridgeshire played a big part during the Second World War and many airfields were sited here. If you have an interest in aircraft you will enjoy Duxford Imperial War Museum with its wonderful collection of planes, including the Concorde. It is not all aeroplanes though, a land warfare museum is attached and the collection has some armoured vehicles from the First World War up to the present day. To do the visit to Duxford justice you should spend the whole day at the old airfield.
Cambridge is only 80 miles from London and can be easily reached by car; it is also well served by the rail network. Accommodation in and around Cambridge is plentiful and includes first class hotels, many farmhouse B&B’s, self catering establishments, and guest houses in a competitive price range.
