Nottingham is best known for the tales of Robin Hood but there is much more to this famous city than this popular folk hero. Nottingham is at the centre of the East Midlands and offers the tourist or weekend visitor a good central base to tour this historic and cultural region. The city claims to have the oldest pub in the world, but which one as three of them are laying claim to this, the contenders are The Bell, Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem and the Salutation, all have excellent evidence but none has exclusivity, the jury is out as they say.

Nottingham has a medieval past and much evidence can be seen in and around the City and a trip to Nottingham Castle will provide the visitor fine examples of this. Nottingham receives a considerable volume of tourism with many visitors are attracted by Nottingham's nightlife and shops, by its history, and by the legend of Robin Hood. The ancient market area hosts a large number of lively clubs and bars and although it was never mentioned in food publications before the eighties, a fine range of cuisine reflects the ethnic diversity of the city with the Nottingham Restaurant Awards that played a leading role in reviving and promoting the industry.

With its excellent road and rail links, Nottingham makes an ideal base for exploring the East Midlands region perhaps a visit To Leicestershire and a trip on the Grand Union Canal, or you could hire a bike and ride around Rutland Water. Nearby Northamptonshire is the home of Silverstone and if attending one of the many motoring events held there, staying in Nottingham could be a cheaper option. Derbyshire and the famous Peak District are just along the M1 motorway and a day exploring here is easy.

Nottingham has some of the best old hotels in the Eased Midlands area and a full range of B&B accommodation and guest houses option for the tourist or traveller.
